The University of South Carolina Gamecocks football team made all of us alumni extremely proud with an exciting 33-28 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in yesterday's Outback Bowl. The Gamecocks finished the season with an 11-2 record, making it back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history (last season was the first time the football program had ever won 11 games in a season). To understand how happy I am, let me put it into perspective. The Gamecocks have wrapped up two consecutive 11-2 seasons. When I was a student at South Carolina, my freshman year in 1998, the football team had a 1-10 record (under head coach Brad Scott), and in 1999 we finished 0-11 (under head coach Lou Holtz). The records have almost completely reversed!

Holtz, who inherited a struggling team, would go on to give us exciting seasons during my last two years at school, finishing 8-4 and 9-3 during the 2000 and 2001 seasons (he also delivered the commencement speech at my graduation in spring 2002). But he was never able to build a dominant football program.

Then came along the hiring of Steve Spurrier to replace Holtz in 2005. Spurrier has produced winning records (and one .500 season in 2007) during each of his eight seasons at South Carolina. The first few years were above average, usually equaling about seven victories a season. But over the last three seasons, Spurrier has built a powerhouse football program: 9 wins in 2010, including an SEC Eastern Division Championship, and, as I previously stated, 11 wins each in 2011 and 2012.

Spurrier has created this success by making the University of South Carolina a place where many of the top high school football players in the country want to go. And he's especially succeeded in attracting the top in-state talent. When I was growing up in South Carolina, most of the top football players from the state would choose the other Southern schools like Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, and Auburn. And if they stayed in state, they were most likely to choose Clemson. But not anymore. Spurrier, for example, has recruited four out of the last five South Carolina Mr. Football Award winners, an honor given to the top high school football player in the state (announced each December at the conclusion of the high school season). Four in a row became Gamecocks—2008 Mr. Football Award winner, cornerback Stephon Gilmore; 2009 winner, running back Marcus Lattimore; 2010 winner, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney; and 2011 winner, wide receiver Shaq Roland—until the 2012 winner, wide receiver/running back Tramel Terry signed with Georgia last month (there's still time for him to come to his senses though). Gilmore, Lattimore, and Clowney each have become/became among the top players in college football in their positions.

And it's with Clowney that I will end this boasting. The Rock Hill native, whose signing less than two years ago was the highlight of my Valentine's Day wish, will go into the 2013 season as the best defensive player in college football and will be a Heisman Trophy favorite. He solidified that with his tenacious play throughout the 2012 season, and he summed it up in a single play in the Outback Bowl yesterday.

In the fourth quarter, with South Carolina trailing Michigan by one point, and after a controversial first down call by the officials that went in favor of the Wolverines, Clowney took matters into his own hands, literally, with a ferocious, break-neck speed, helmet-flying-off tackle on running back Vincent Smith that caused a fumble that he also picked up with one hand. The play quickly became an Internet sensation, with SB Nation posting a gif of the sequence within minutes of it happening.

You can watch video of Clowney's unbelievable play.

I'm Speaking At the WU Tonight

Posted by Jarvis Holliday On 10/12/2011 No comments
I'm speaking on a panel tonight at an event being put on by the Winthrop University Association of Black Journalists (WUABJ), a student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The event is titled "Self Made" and will be a discussion by a group of professionals in media who've ventured out on our own. I was happy to accept the invitation to speak. I enjoy talking to young people (keeps me young) and always hope that I can at least share one piece of advice or tip they find useful. Plus, I enjoy visiting college campuses because it usually takes me back to memories of the best four years of my life (shout to my alma mater, USC; Go Gamecocks!).

The event takes place tonight (October 12) at 7 p.m. at the DiGiorgio Campus Center (Room 114) at Winthrop. My fellow panelists are Brandi Williams, owner of Studio B Public Relations; Jaye Delai, a veteran broadcaster; and Anne Marie Holder, CEO of Spark Strategic Ideas.

Rudy Currence Releases 'The O.T.H.E.R.'

Posted by Jarvis Holliday On 8/31/2011 No comments
Rock Hill native/Charlotte-based singer Rudy Currence has released his new single "The O.T.H.E.R." It's from the Disturbing Tha Peace/Island Def Jam artist's forthcoming major-label debut album.

"The O.T.H.E.R." is produced by Don Cannon, and while Rudy is most known for his soulful and inspirational ballads, he seems to have aimed for the clubs with this one. It's certainly catchy--I've already hit replay a few times while blogging about this. He posted the song on YouTube a few days ago, and it'll be available on iTunes on September 6. North Carolina Is a Gas-Guzzling State

Posted by Jarvis Holliday On 5/19/2011 No comments
In North Carolina, as if we don't pay some of the highest gas taxes in the nation, which is why gas here is consistently about 20 cents higher than a few miles south of the state line, we're also some gas-guzzling people. In a recent study by Forbes, they ranked "America's Most And Least Gas-Guzzling Cities." Some of the cities ranked are listed as metropolitan areas, and topping the list as burning up the most gas is Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill. Coming in second place: Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill. And not to be left out, in sixth place is Greensboro-Winston Salem-High Point. So North Carolina cities take three of the top six slots.

Time to start carpooling again.

"The cities and suburbs of 'The Triangle' are close enough that people don’t think twice about driving from one to the other. Yet in doing so, the average household racks up 21,800 miles per year. Assuming an average 20.3 miles per gallon, that means burning through 1,074 gallons per year, about $4,200 at current prices," Forbes writer Christopher Helman says.

"North Carolina does not fare well in the rankings. Close on the Triangle’s (Tar)heels comes the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill region, with an average household gasoline demand of 1,061 gallons. In sixth place, the average household in North Carolina’s Greensboro-Winston Salem-High Point metroplex spends $4,000 for 1,017 gallons per year," Helman continues.

If our state government and department of transportation ever needed any more reasons to complete Interstate 485 in Charlotte and to build the proposed high-speed rail between Charlotte and Raleigh, they have it.

Rounding out the top-five Most Gas-Guzzling Cities is Atlanta in third place, Nashville in fourth, and Monmouth-Ocean Counties, N.J. is fifth. Meanwhile, the least gas-guzzling city, unsurprisingly, is New York, where many households don't even own cars. Click here to see the full list.

UPDATE - Feb. 14: Clowney is a Gamecock!

A week from today, on February 14, I'm hoping for the best gift ever! You probably think I'm referring to Valentine's Day. Well, that's great and all. But this year, February 14 takes on new significance because it's the day the nation's number one ranked high school football recruit plans to announce where he will attend college this fall. That top-ranked young man is Jadeveon Clowney, a defensive end from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill. Not only is he a local kid, but he's narrowed his choices down to three schools: South Carolina (my beloved Gamecocks), Alabama (roll away from here Tide), and Clemson (get your paws off).

Bypassing last week's National Signing Day, and keeping the college sports world in anticipation, Jadeveon plans to make his decision on his 18th birthday, which also happens to be Valentine's Day. The 6'6", 240-pound man-child is on the cover of the current issue of ESPN The Magazine, with labels affixed to him like "BCS-ready now," "Runs like a deer," and "Future Super Bowl MVP."

If the Gamecocks win over Jadeveon's heart next week, he would elevate us to a top-10 recruiting class, in what has already been an impressive recruiting season for the Old Ball Coach a.k.a. Steve Spurrier. This would mark the second year in a row Spurrier has landed the top player in the state--last year was running back Marcus Lattimore and you saw the awesome first season he just had--and this kid coming out of South Pointe is also the top in the nation.

Come on Cupid!

Local Ties on Olympic Ice

Posted by Jarvis Holliday On 2/16/2010 No comments
Two young ladies with ties to the Charlotte area are competing today in the women's 500m race at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Heather Richardson, 20, and Lauren Cholewinski, 21, will be racing for their first Olympic medals in this individual sport.

Richardson is from High Point and as a kid her mother would bring her to the ice rink at Eastland Mall to train with a coach (those were the good old days of Eastland that we often hear about, before I, and probably most of you, moved to Charlotte). Cholewinski was born in Pineville and grew up in York and Rock Hill. She now lives in Utah, where she trains.

Heather Richardson, left, and Lauren Cholewinski.

The women's 500m race starts at 4 p.m. (1 p.m. Vancouver time) and will air at 8 p.m. on NBC. Richardson and Cholewinski are among the four Americans who make up the pool of 36 women competing in this event from around the world.

Charlotte (and the nation) is showing love to our military service men and women in honor of Veterans Day. Even though the holiday is this Wednesday, November 11, there are specials going on throughout the week. Here are a few that GPT has learned of, and I got the idea to put this list together after talking to an old friend.

One of my childhood friends from South Carolina visited Charlotte today and he paid me a visit while in town. We were chilling at the crib when he mentioned that after he left my house he was going to the Charlotte Bobcats box office because they're giving away two tickets to tomorrow's (Tuesday) home game against the Orlando Magic. I told Caleb, who served in the Army for a few years after high school, that I hadn't heard anything about the ticket giveaway. But sure enough, at about 5:30 p.m. he was calling me as he was leaving the box office at Time Warner Cable arena saying he'd picked up his two free tickets. And he said "they're pretty good seats."

If you're a veteran or active duty, you can pick up your tickets by showing proof of service (military ID card, DD214 form, military orders, etc.). The box office opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday and will be open through the start of the game, which begins at 7 p.m. Call the box office at 704-688-9000 if you have any questions. I didn't see any info about the giveaway on the Bobcats website, www.bobcats.com.

There are also some sweet food deals for veterans.

Applebee's nationwide is offering a free entree to all veterans and active duty military personnel on Wednesday. There are several ways you can show proof of eligibility to obtain your free meal: U.S. Uniform Services ID card, current leave and earnings statement (LES), veterans organization card (i.e., American Legion and VFW), photograph in uniform, wearing uniform, DD214, citation, or commendation.

There are 12 Applebee's locations in the Charlotte area, including Concord, Matthews, Pineville, Gastonia, and Rock Hill. Click here for more information on the Veterans Day special.

Also on Wednesday:

Wolfman Pizza, a Charlotte-based, California-Style pizza restaurant with four area locations, is offering 50 percent off your meal if you're a veteran or active duty. If you like 'em hot and sweet, Krispy Kreme is giving a free donut to our brave men and women (click here). Veterans and active duty personnel can get a free Bloomin’ Onion and a drink at Outback Steakhouse. Click here for more details.

The food love is even spilling into next week. On Monday, November 16, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Golden Corral is holding its Military Appreciation Monday Dinner. Get your free meal, and visit www.goldencorral.com/military for more details.

The big-box stores are getting into the spirit as well.

Mooresville-based Lowe's Home Improvement is honoring Veterans Day at its more than 1,600 stores nationwide. Through Saturday, people from the active duty ranks, reservists, honorably discharged, and retired military men and women with valid identification or proof of service are eligible to receive a special 10 percent discount on in-store and special order purchases up to $5,000.

On Veterans Day only, Sam’s Club locations nationwide will be giving away 25,000 Hugo canes free of charge to military veterans in need of mobility assistance. Limited quantities per location and available only while supplies last. You don't have to be a Sam’s Club member, but proof of military service is required. Visit www.hugosalutes.com.

If you know of any special offer that I've missed, feel free to post it in the comments section. And if you go get one of these freebies, come back and post your experience in the comments as well.

A great story as we celebrate Black History Month and a vivid reminder of how far we've come as a nation, a reformed racist named Elwin Wilson formally apologized this week to civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis for participating in a beating of Lewis in Rock Hill in 1961. The story aired this evening on NBC Nightly News. See video below.
