Anthony Hamilton Releases Christmas Album, 'Home For The Holidays;' Prepares for Tour

Anthony Hamilton has released his first-ever Christmas album today. Titled Home For The Holidays, it's 14 songs that are a combination of the Grammy Award-winning singer covering holiday classics and performing original songs (six originals). He has guest appearances by Chaka Khan, Gavin DeGraw, and ZZ Ward, which reflect the many different sounds the album has, but it all comes together in a cohesive and soulful manner.

I plan to buy the album by the Charlotte native, and so far this morning I've been streaming it on Spotify, which I've embedded below.

My first impressions of the album are that it's soulful, at times traditional and at times contemporary, with blends of R&B, blues, and gospel. My early favorites are track 9, "Coming Home," and track 14, "Spirit Of Love," which are both original songs. As for covers, my favorite so far is track 8, "What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas."

You can purchase the new album today on Amazon or iTunes for $9.99. I'm old-school when it comes to buying music--I still buy CDs--so I'll be copping it from Best Buy or Target (and then ripping it to MP3's later).

Also, the HamFam will be happy to know that Anthony is embarking on a 17-city Home For The Holidays Tour, beginning November 27 in Dallas and ending December 21 in Wallingford, Connecticut. The Carolinas dates are December 2 in Greenville, SC, December 3 in Durham, and December 12 in North Myrtle Beach.

Anthony Hamilton and Fantasia Among All-Star Lineup on 'The Best Man Holiday' Soundtrack

Fourteen years after The Best Man arrived at movie theaters and subsequently became a cult classic on DVD and replays on cable, particularly in many African-American households, the sequel, The Best Man Holiday, is finally on its way. When it hits theaters nationwide on November 15, you'll see the ensemble cast making their return: Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Monica Calhoun, Harold Perrineau, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, and Melissa De Sousa. And whereas the movie features a who's-who list of actors and actresses, the soundtrack has top billing from R&B stars.

The Best Man Holiday – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be released ahead of the film, hitting stores and online outlets (like Amazon) on October 29, via RCA Records. Two singers who call Charlotte home--Anthony Hamilton and Fantasia Barrino--are among the All-Star R&B lineup, which also includes: R. Kelly, Monica, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, Jordin Sparks, Ne-Yo, and more. The soundtrack is a combination of newly written material as well as classics being covered by the artists. And since this is a holiday movie, most of the songs have Christmas themes.

Ed D. Kane and Anthony Hamilton Offer Gritty Look at 'Da Streets'

Many of you know Anthony Hamilton for his love songs, ballads, and soul-stirring music. But if you've followed his career since the early days, you'll recall that in addition to being nominated for Grammys, going platinum, and selling out concerts, he's always been a sought-after hook singer. And by that, I mean singing the choruses on rap songs. In fact, his first hit song was the 2002 collaboration with Nappy Roots on the rap song "Po' Folks." Two years later, he assisted Jadakiss on one of the biggest songs of The LOX member's career, "Why."

The rap collaborations have continued over the years, with A-Ham singing hooks for everyone from Common to Nas to Twista to Young Jeezy. For his latest collaboration, he brings it home to his native Charlotte, with Ed D. Kane, an artist on Anthony's own label, Mister's Music. The song is titled "Da Streets" and the video was released a few days ago.

The video was shot in "da streets" of Charlotte, literally, featuring gritty scenes paired with news footage of controversial national stories and civil rights issues. The visuals are to match the song's message, and you could say that it follows in the vein of the aforementioned "Po' Folks" and "Why." Unfortunately, "Da Streets" falls short in its efforts. Ed D. Kane's lyrics aren't strong enough in this song, and his profanity is a distraction. I applaud when rappers add substance to their music, but this song isn't quite "conscious" music because his attempt to bring attention to issues like drugs and violence could be confused with glorifying them. However, I do like when Ed D. Kane says, "You know you know better. Done been selling crack out your mama's house."

Anthony nails the hook, as usual. And it's good to see him continuing to rep his old hood--Beatties Ford Road, West Charlotte. I'm sure the locals surrounding him in the video appreciate the love.

'Anthony Hamilton Day' Proclaimed in Charlotte; the Soul Singer Concludes 'Big Payback'

Anthony Hamilton has concluded his second annual "Big Payback Week of Service," in which he spent the week giving back to his hometown. Anthony made stops at several Charlotte charities and nonprofit organizations, donating tens of thousands of dollars, truckloads of food, and clothing. He talked about it yesterday on Charlotte Today on WCNC (NBC Charlotte).

For his charitable deeds, February 27 was proclaimed Anthony Hamilton Day by Mayor Anthony Foxx and the City of Charlotte.

Anthony Hamilton's Got Them J's, Up for Two GRAMMYs

Charlotte-native and platinum-selling recording artist Anthony Hamilton was stuntin' on 'em this week. He celebrated his 42nd birthday a few days ago and took to Instagram to show off the gifts he received from Jordan Brand, the lucrative division of Nike, run by Michael Jordan, and maker of the forever-popular Air Jordan sneaker. A-Ham has had a friendship with MJ for several years now, something he attributes to their "North Carolina connection." Jordan's company sent over a dozen pairs of retro Air Jordans, or J's as they're known in the streets, as well as a nice watch for Anthony's birthday. The company has also thrown parties for him in the past (see here and here).

That watch reminds me of one of my favorite lyrics from rapper Sauce Money, years ago: "Since my watch was a gift, there's no better time than the present."

The good times continue for A-Ham. He's nominated for two GRAMMY Awards this year: Best R&B Song for "Pray for Me" and Best R&B Album for Back To Love. He's up against R. Kelly, Robert Glasper, Tamia, and Tyrese in the album category. The 55th GRAMMY Awards air live Sunday, February 10, 8 p.m. on CBS.

‘As Written: Anthony Hamilton’ Tonight on Centric

Charlotte's platinum-selling R&B and soul singer Anthony Hamilton is featured tonight (May 6) on the newest episode of As Written on Centric. The series is described as: "Through candid interviews, live performances, and behind the scenes footage, As Written unlocks the door to the creative process and exposes the inspiration behind the work of some of your favorite R&B and soul artists." On tonight's episode, premiering at 11 p.m., we're taken inside all of those things of Anthony's musical career that has spawned several hits over the last decade.

'Nolimit' to His Reality

Many of you have listened to Nolimit Larry & The Morning Maddhouse on Power 98 (WPEG 97.9 FM) for years. The lead guy on the show, Nolimit Larry aka Noleezy, government name Larry Mims, is a well-recognized voice and face in Charlotte. You likely know his story, and if you've lived here for a decade or more, you've been along for the ride. He worked his way up from being a Johnson C. Smith University student interning at Power 98 in the late '90s to eventually hosting one of the top-rated radio shows in the Carolinas. And in this climate of more and more radio stations moving to syndicated programming, Nolimit is in rarefied air.

Last month, he launched a new website, nolimitlarry.com, where you can keep up with his many involvements, from hosting parties to lending a hand to charities. He's also working on a reality show, tentatively titled American DJ. In the three-minute video reel below, you get a look inside Nolimit's career. And in the process, it's a great look at Charlotte, with brief appearances by several celebrities and professional athletes that either live here or are from here. Plus, an ode to Charlotte's Anthony Hamilton with "Comin' From Where I'm From" playing.

Happy Birthday Anthony Hamilton and J. Cole!

Singer Anthony Hamilton and rapper J. Cole have more than just their musical talents and North Carolina roots in common. They also share January 28 as their birthdays. Happy birthday, fellas, and keep repping for N.C.--Charlotte and Fayetteville, respectively!

J. Cole turns 27 today. Another important date on his calendar is February 12 at the Grammy Awards (8 p.m., CBS), where he's nominated for Best New Artist along with The Band Perry, Bon Iver, Nicki Minaj, and Skrillex. Anthony is 41 today and while he already has a Grammy trophy on his mantle, he's performing this year at the Grammy In The Schools Live! concert February 8 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Anthony Hamilton Goes 'Back To Love' December 13

Grammy Award-winning, platinum-selling recording artist Anthony Hamilton is releasing his next album, Back To Love, on December 13. It'll be the Charlotte singer's fourth studio album and he's putting it out exactly three years after his last album, 2008's The Point of It All.

The first single from Back To Love is "Woo", which finds Anthony in awe of a woman he meets, singing in his usual soulful tone. "Ooh girl, you're so bad. [Woo woo ooh ooh.] But it feels so good," he croons on the chorus. He shot the video for "Woo" on Friday and posted a couple of camera phone photos to his Facebook page.

A Chance to Open Up for Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton at Budweiser Superfest

Aspiring singers listen up. Myspace Music and Budweiser are giving you the chance to open up for Jill Scott, Charlotte native Anthony Hamilton, Mint Condition, Doug E. Fresh, and DJ Jazzy Jeff at the 2011 Budweiser Superfest tour, billed as "Jill Scott's Summer Block Party." The opening act competitions take place about a week before each of the 12 selected concert tour stops in July and August, from D.C. to Dallas, including Charlotte. The opening act competition here is scheduled for August 16, and the concert is August 24 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

Here's how to enter the contest to become the opening act for your local market. You must be 21 years old or older; and go to www.myspace.com/budweiseropeningact, fill out the contest form, and upload a video of you singing one of two songs acapella: "One Last Cry" or "Sweet Thing." The submission deadline for the Charlotte show is July 28. A select number of contestants will be chosen to compete at the showcase on August 16, and the local winner will receive $5,000 and the opening slot at the tour stop on August 24. Plus, each of the local winners from the 12 cities will then be voted on in another competition, with the national prize winner receiving $25,000.

Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton 'So In Love' In Video

Jill Scott debuted a new video this week for "So In Love," her collaboration with Charlotte's own Anthony Hamilton. It's the first single off her upcoming album, The Light of the Sun, which is scheduled to be released June 21.

I believe "So In Love" marks the first time Jill and Anthony have collaborated on a song. The video matches the feel-good, head-over-heels tone, complete with a wedding, party, and plenty of bright colors. And because Jill is an accomplished actress (from starring in Tyler Perry movies to the HBO series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency) and Anthony has always been comfortable in front of the character and shown a lot of personality in videos, their chemistry looks natural.

Anthony Hamilton to Open for Prince Concert in Charlotte

Prince's "Welcome 2 America" tour six-date trek through the Carolinas was announced less than a week ago, and people haven't stopped talking about it. Tickets went on sale Monday morning and several of my friends (close ones and Facebook ones) were typing in their credit card numbers, eager to get good seats. Well, today brings another announcement: the artists who will open for Prince at each stop in the Carolinas.

For the March 24 concert at Time Warner Cable Arena here in Charlotte, Prince's special guest will be Anthony Hamilton. Anthony, of course, is a platinum-selling, Grammy-winning artist in his own right. He's also, as you should know, a Charlotte native (and good friend of Grown People Talking). This will be his second concert this month in his hometown. On March 4, he headlined "Anthony Hamilton and Friends" at The Fillmore Charlotte (click here to see photos).

Anthony's concert at The Fillmore was an intimate performance that allowed him to be close to fans at the 2,000-seat venue. Opening for Prince, will elevate him to rock-star status as TWC Arena holds 18,000 for concerts and it looks like the short-notice show might sell out. I would think that many of Prince's fans are fans of Anthony, and if they aren't, they most likely will be after this concert. Anthony puts on a great show, and his catalog of hits (from hooks on rap songs to the contagious "Charlene" to the love ballad "The Point Of It All") is prime for the wide age range of fans who are coming out to see Mr. Purple Rain.

Read About It: K-Ci and JoJo Come Clean with Reality Show

You've probably been wondering what's been going on with K-Ci and JoJo--and even more importantly, what's up with Jodeci? I tried to get some answers for you when I interviewed the Hailey brothers for their new reality show, K-Ci & JoJo ... Come Clean, which premieres Tuesday, October 19 at 9 p.m. on TV One. One particular question I asked them, that I hope we see some traction on, is what will it take for all of Charlotte's R&B stars to do a concert together. Imagine if K-Ci and JoJo, Anthony Hamilton, Fantasia, Calvin Richardson, Sunshine Anderson, and Horace Brown all put on a show in Charlotte. It would be hours of great soul music from artists who got their starts right here in North Carolina, who are either from Charlotte or currently call it home. I think fans would come out to support this momentous occasion.

Anthony Hamilton's Twins Almost Here

I interviewed Anthony Hamilton this morning for an article I'm writing for a publication (I'll post the link to the article when it is published, likely next week). I wanted to talk to him to get his perspective on a couple of artists I'm profiling, and as soon as he came on the line he said, "I got twin boys on the way. Tell me something!" We then joked for a minute because he knows I have a twin brother. I told him a couple of things to get ready for, but he should probably seek advice from someone like Diddy, who became the father of twins a few years ago.

Anthony said his wife, Tarsha, is 34 weeks into her pregnancy, so the bundles of joy will likely arrive here around the end of the month.

Fantasia Holds Big Birthday Shindig at Her Home

Fantasia Barrino turned 26 Wednesday--you might've seen her on BET's 106 & Park that day where they presented her with a birthday cake after she premiered her video for "Bittersweet." And Tasia kept the celebration going with a party at her Charlotte home Friday. As you can see in these camera phone pics below, VH1 cameras were there (she's taping season two of Fantasia For Real) as was fellow R&B star Anthony Hamilton.

Anthony Hamilton Makes 'Greener' a Cool Song

This evening on BET's 106 & Park, Fonzworth Bentley premiered his new video for "Greener." The song features Anthony Hamilton, but he doesn't appear in the video. It's a conceptual video, and you can judge for yourself as to whether you like it. As for the song, I like it because of the beat and A-Ham singing the chorus. Hamilton use to be the go-to guy for singing hooks on rappers' songs before he started churning out hits of his own. More rappers need to request the Charlotte native's services because his style of crooning can take a song from decent to pretty good, as is the case with "Greener."

Even though the song leaked more than a year ago, it now has a video--in fact, I asked Hamilton about the song last year during an online interview for Charlotte magazine (click here to read it). It's apparent that G.O.O.D Music, the Kanye West-run label that Bentley is signed to, is now pushing "Greener" as a single. And Bentley said on 106 & Park that he'll be releasing an EP before the end of summer, as a set up to his long-awaited debut album, C.O.L.O.U.R.S. He's an above-average lyricist, but it's hard to take him seriously as a rapper. I still see him as the guy who dances with umbrellas in music videos. Plus, his persona as a stylish gentleman, as he's instructed in MTV's From G's to Gents, doesn't mesh well with the hip-hop world. I'm all for mature, sophisticated hip-hop, but I'm not sure I can get into a rap artist who always seems to be in character--a distinctively well-dressed character.

Anthony Hamilton Almost Makes It Onto Another Classic Remake

As you probably know by now, Charlotte native Anthony Hamilton was among the group of 80 star musicians who assembled a couple of weeks ago to record "We Are The World: 25 For Haiti," a remake of the original 1985 classic that was led by Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, and Quincy Jones. Well, another legendary Jones tune has been remade for Jones's upcoming album. Jermaine Dupri has produced a remake of "The Secret Garden," which when originally released in 1989 featured James Ingram, Al B. Sure, El DeBarge, and Barry White.

As Dupri explains in this MTV News video clip below, the new version, which hasn't been released yet, features Usher, Robin Thicke, Tyrese, Trey Songz, and White's original verse. Said Dupri, "It was hard because I wanted to put Anthony Hamilton on there, I wanted to put Maxwell...but it's only a four or five-guy spot."

Happy Birthday Anthony Hamilton; Good Luck at the Grammys!

R&B singer Anthony Hamilton is celebrating his birthday today and he has a lot to be thankful for. I sent A-Ham a text this morning wishing him a happy b-day and asking him how things are going.

"This is an amazing day for me," he replied. "It's my birthday and I'm in L.A. readying for my party tonight that Brand Jordan and Michael are throwing for me. God is great."

So not only is Michael Jordan throwing a party tonight for Hamilton, 39, but this is a busy week for the Charlotte native. This is Grammy Week, which means there are tons of celebrity and music industry events going on in Los Angeles leading up to Sunday's show (8 p.m., CBS).


Hamilton, who won his first ever Grammy last year after receiving several nominations over the years, is nominated for three Grammy Awards this year:

-Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "The Point Of It All," the title track from his latest album.

-Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for "Soul Music," the song he performed on the Soul Men Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

-Best R&B Album for The Point Of It All.
