Potential North Carolina Bumper Stickers, Inspired by State Legislature, Courtesy of Comedian TV Hosts

North Carolina has become the butt of jokes, thanks to extreme policies and laws either recently proposed or passed by the state legislature (North Carolina General Assembly). While many of these measures are no laughing matter--new gun, abortion, and voter ID laws to name a few--they have become great fodder for late-night TV show hosts.

Below are a few clips from segments that have aired over the past week. I pulled a quote from each one that, if it would happen to appear on a bumper sticker, wouldn't look too fondly for N.C.

Last night on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, fill-in host John Oliver said: "North Carolina's voter ID law is just the tip of a true sh*tberg of the legislative session."

Friday night on Real Time with Bill Maher, Bill said: "North Carolina, right now, is going ape sh*t in a way no state ever has."



Last Monday on The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert said: "Who makes barbecue sauce with vinegar? That's what you use to clean a toilet, and when I say toilet I mean Charlotte." (Commentary on N.C. begins at 4:07 mark.)

Nick Cannon Holding Auditions for 'Wild 'N Out' Monday in Charlotte

It was announced last month that Nick Cannon would be reviving his popular sketch comedy TV series, Wild 'N Out, in 2013 for MTV2. The series originally aired from 2005 to 2007 on MTV, and helped propel the careers of comedians Affion Crockett, Kevin Hart, Katt Williams, and others. This time around, in addition to appearances from established funnymen, Nick is looking for a new crop of comedians and improv actors to join the show.

He's holding auditions this Monday, December 3 in Charlotte. Not a whole lot of details are available, but if you want to find out more info you should probably listen to Power 98 (97.9 FM). On the radio station's website, it says to "send a video showing your funny for casting to: WnOCasting@mtv2.com. Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes. If your video is chosen, we’ll send you the address and location info to meet with Nick Cannon for an in person audition."

You should also follow Nick on Twitter @NickCannon. He shared on Twitter and Instagram this evening that he was leaving Atlanta, where he held auditions today, and was on his way to Charlotte.

Wild 'N Out was a funny show and it also featured great musical performances (and sexy Wild 'N Out Girls) each episode. I think the reruns still air, and it'll be good to see new episodes return next year. Nick, as you know, is also host of America's Got Talent on NBC.

He's also coming to town to do charitable deeds. He's scheduled to make appearances in Charlotte on Monday, including Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, Levine Children's Hospital, and Buffalo Wild Wings at NASCAR Hall of Fame, for the Second Annual Celebrity Charity Wishes “Bears for Buddies" event, an initiative that raises money for terminally ill children and provides them with the essential needs of everyday living. Nick will be joined by DJ Drama, Grammy Award-winning producer Bruce Irvine, singer/songwriter Tocarra Hamilton, and Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Cannon as they distribute hundreds of new teddy bears and gift bags to children.

National Poetry Slam 2012 Kicks Off in Charlotte

Charlotte has one of the top slam poetry communities in the country. SlamCharlotte won the National Poetry Slam in 2007 (host city: Austin, Texas) and 2008 (Madison, Wisconsin), but it's been a four-year drought since the spoken-word crown has belonged to the Queen City. Well now the home team, led by well-known slammaster Bluz, gets to go for it on their own turf. National Poetry Slam 2012 is underway in Charlotte now through Saturday, August 11.

The annual competition, now in its 23rd year, officially kicks off today, but there were some registration and welcome events held yesterday afternoon and evening as many of the expected 400 poets began arriving to Charlotte. They represent 72 teams from across North America (United States and Canada) and will compete in 46 bouts over five days. If you aren't familiar with slam poetry, it, essentially, is competitive performance poetry. Performers use a combination of poetry, storytelling, songwriting, theatre, stand-up comedy, and anything else dramatic and engaging to go for the high score of 10 from judges.

Most of the National Poetry Slam 2012 events are open to the public (see schedule); some, like the workshops, are free, while others, like the bouts, cost $7 to attend. Among the nearly 50 events on the schedule, most are taking place at theaters, museums, and galleries throughout Uptown, and there are also a few social events like parties, a movie showcase, and a picnic. If you happen to be in Uptown late this afternoon, there's an event you'll want to check out. A poetic flash mob is scheduled to take place at 5:15 p.m. at the corners of Trade and Tryon Streets.

Kevin Hart Pops Up In Charlotte for 'Laugh At My Pain'

Kevin Hart is one of the funniest comedians going right now, and yesterday his movie Laugh At My Pain opened exclusively at AMC theaters nationwide. It's a step up from his straight-to-DVD films, which have been part of the reason he's become a comedy household name--most friends of mine have at least one Kevin Hart stand-up on DVD. He's also come a long way from the movie that first brought him to my attention, 2004's Soul Plane. Not only was he the central character in Soul Plane, but the movie was so widely panned by critics and fans that it could've ended his career. Now, it's just one more funny notch under his Laugh At My Pain mantra (and it's coincidental that last night I happened to watch The Boondocks episode where they spoofed a fictional release of Soul Plane 2).

Also last night, I saw people posting on Facebook and Twitter how funny Kevin's new movie is, which means he'll probably be laughing all the way to the bank. This is on top of his successful comedy tour (that grossed $15 million in ticket sales) of which the movie is based. On day two of his movie opening, he could've been anywhere in the country and he chose to come to Charlotte. At about noon today, he posted on Twitter: "ATTN Charlotte NC: Im n ur city, im giving away 100 tickets 2 the 1pm showing of Laugh at My Pain to the 1st 100 people to meet me there..." The theater of choice was AMC Carolina Pavilion on South Boulevard. I'm assuming he only announced this one hour in advance to keep the crowd from getting out of control.

Once he arrived to the theater, he doubled his offer, saying that he bought 200 tickets. See the Twitpic below.

Cubby Tries to 'Run the World' In Latest Video Spoof

I'm not sure what Cubby Squires has been up to now that he's no longer on 96.1's A.M. Mayhem morning show, but one thing's for sure: he's looking for his next 15 minutes of fame. In late 2008, Cubby became an Internet sensation when the video spoof he made of Beyoncé's "Single Ladies"--complete with black leotard--went viral, garnering millions of views on YouTube. He rode the wave of fame for two years from that video, appearing on numerous television shows, as recently as a cameo on Tosh.0 in February and on Beyoncé's nationally televised concert special last November. Now, Cubby is back dancing like Bey in his newest spoof: Beyoncé's "Run the World (Girls)" video.

Cubby has no problem making fun of himself, but in the 4:45-long video, I didn't find myself laughing until about the 3:20 mark (when he appears in the green ensemble). Since he posted the video on YouTube last Wednesday, it's garnered a respectable 17,000-plus views. But the clip has actually been watched much more than that--it's been picked up by several gossip and entertainment websites, some who rip the video and upload it onto their own servers, often making it difficult to track the number of views. Those include PerezHilton.com, Bossip.com, and WorldstarHipHop.com, the latter of which has received more than 75,000 views in the first four days.

Looks like Cubby's trying to rock that black leotard all the way to the bank. And if it appears to not fit as tightly as it once did, that's because Cubby says he's lost more than 40 pounds in the last eight months.

Like We Always Do At This Time: CIAA Week Is Here

The anticipation has been building for the past month (even longer for some people), and now CIAA Week is here. The CIAA Tournament officially kicks off today in Charlotte with the opening of the women's basketball tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena. The men's tournament begins Wednesday. The men's and women's teams from the 13 CIAA colleges are playing all week with hopes of making it to the championship game on Saturday. Likewise, tens of thousands of fans, visitors, and Charlotteans will be partying all week with hopes of still being able to stand by the time the parties wrap up on Sunday.

There are more than 200 events scheduled (official CIAA events, but the majority from individual promoters), including networking events, day parties, concerts, comedy shows, fashion shows, after-parties, and more. Since the New Year rang in, the excitement has been building in anticipation of CIAA Week in Charlotte. And now that we've reached February, the talks of parties and events--and which ones people will be going to--is just about all I've been hearing from friends. I've also had a few Grown People Talking readers email me asking if I'll be putting together a list of CIAA parties this year.

As I did last year, I'll be including them in my "Events for the Week" and this will be a select list of parties and events I'm recommending. Because there are literally at least 100 events going on that week (most from promoters who capitalize on people's appetite to party, and others are official CIAA-sanctioned events), I'll use this blog to give you a few highly recommended events to choose from each day.


And I still have you covered in what I'm dubbing the master list. I've compiled a list of CIAA events and parties for CharlotteMagazine.com. This annual one-day festival displays Italy's rich culture, traditions, arts, wine, and cuisine.
